Literal meaning of prostate means guardian. This gland is located between the bladder and the penis in the male excretory system. When men gets older, this gland sometimes enlarge which will lead to urination problems, benign enlargement and even cancer. Most men are caught by this problem during 60s and the percentage of men suffering from this problem rises with the increase of age. However, quality diet can prevent this problem and can even avoid prostate cancer.

Fresh fruits:

Eating fresh fruits is good for prostate gland. These fruits contain sugar which helps protect this gland. Red fruits such as tomatoes, pink grapefruit, strawberries and watermelons are more preferred to keep your prostate in good shape. They contain lycopene which is helps to protect prostate. Studies show that men with lycopene diet have less incidences of prostate.

Fresh vegetables:

Fresh vegetables such as beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips etc are also good for prostate. They also contain lycopene in them. In addition to this, some vegetables have antioxidant namely sulforaphane which lower inflammation and eventually discards carcinogens. Some of the vegetables containing antioxidant are Broccoli, cabbages, and Swiss chard.

Vegetable and fish oils:

Zinc is the key ingredient which will help the body consume lycopene in fruits and vegetables. It can be found easily in whole fish, shellfish, pumpkins, unpeeled baked potatoes and yogurt.

Mineral selenium helps in producing an antioxidant called glutathione peroxidase which guards the cells from oxidative damage. It also prevents cancerous growth in cells by promoting immune cell activity and is found in fish, garlic and some other food items. In addition to this, vegetable and fish oil are also great for prostate.

Soy:

Soy helps hormone stability inside body which is good for prostate gland. Many vegetarian dishes contain soy but soy from soybean is recommended.

Nuts and seeds:

Nuts, seeds, egg yolk and wheat germ all contains Vitamin E which is good for reducing inflammation and prevention of prostate cancer. Some other products with Vitamin E and high nutrients are pistachios, almonds, Brazil nuts and walnuts.

Sunflower seeds, flax seeds and some other seeds are good for regulating hormones. Ginger and onions are also good for prostate health as they also reduce inflammation.

Herbs:

Some herbs such as saw palmetto are good for enlarged prostate. It stops the development of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase which converts male hormone testosterone into DHT. DHT causes prostate problems.
