I have had a hangnail on my left index finger since last couple of days. Something so little can cause so much discomfort. For some people it may not be so bad but in my case, the skin around the nail is full of puss. Last thing I want to do is sit at A&E for 4 hours for it.

Let me tell you a bit about what causes hangnails. These are coomon amongst people who bite their nails, have dry skin, or peel away the skin around the nail bed. This can be very painful when exposed to water. If the hang nail is large it can cause infection. The best way to avoid an infected hangnail is to avoid getting hangnails in the first place. To prevent it from happening again it is important to keep your fingers well moisturized, especially if you have much contact with hot and cold water.

Here are some remedies I was told about:

1. Olive oil

Dab a cotton ball in olive oil and place on the infected area for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow the skin to soften.

2.  Salt water

Heat half a cup of water in the microwave and add a tablespoon of salt. Soak your finger for at least 5 minutes (make sure the water is not too hot). The water will soften your skin and the the salt will help the swollen skin and work as an antibacterial.

3. Natural yogurt

Put your finger in a bowl of fresh yogurt to soften the skin. Making the skin soft will pop the puss bubble.

4.  Antibacterial ointment

In addition to moisturizing your skin to prevent infection, put some antibacterial ointment over the infected area.

I tried the salt water remedy for two days and it did wonders for me. My puss bubble popped and I applied the antibacterial cream over the area.
