Tending to a young baby can be a very demanding task and the prospect of having to fly with one is even more daunting. However, if there is no way you can miss that all important trip, here are six tips that will make your flight with the baby as easy as it can be.
Contact your airline for information first
It can be very inconvenient if you reach the airline’s office and find out you need to present your baby’s birth certificate or a doctor’s waiver before it can be allowed on board. Moreover, if your baby is still breastfeeding, you will need to clarify whether your airline allows in-flight feeding or not. While you are at it, you should inquire about the seating requirements and whether you can bring your car seat along as well.
Buy a compact stroller
A stroller is a must if you are going to be walking around the airport or rushing to your flight. Since you will be taking your stroller along on the flight, you need to get one that can be folded and is very compact. Even if your baby prefers to be carried around in your arms, the stroller will be useful for placing the diaper bag and other stuff you take along.
Book a flight to go with your baby’s sleeping time
Whether it is a long flight or a short one, you will be grateful for however long your baby sleeps through it. While you might have to book a very early flight in this case, the little inconvenience it will cause you will be better than dealing with a distressed baby in the plane.
Ask for convenient seats
If you are traveling with your spouse you can book the entire row of seats and put the baby on the seat near the isle. This way you can easily get up and go to the washroom or to dispense the diapers without interrupting anyone. Even if you are traveling alone you can request and isle seat and preferably go for the seats in the front. Getting front row seats will give you more room to work with the baby without having to worry about disturbing the passengers seated in front of you.
Pack extras for everything
It is normal for flights to get delayed or make extra stops on the way and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. Pack extra diapers, napkins, formula, wipes and clothes in case you need to use them. You should also pack a shirt and pants for yourself because baby’s can spit and throw up during flights.
Don’t hesitate in asking for help
Flight attendants are responsible for serving you and making your trip as comfortable as possible. If you are facing any issues or need help, don’t hesitate in asking the flight attendants and don’t feel embarrassed about your situation.
Remember, no sensible person is going to give you a hard time about any noise or mess your baby makes. However, as a parent, it is your responsibility to do all in your power to prepare for the worse and do your best so that others are not inconvenienced by you or your baby.
